The great thing about Abetone is that it is compact yet has plenty of ski miles, loads of diverse accommodation and a brilliant safety record.
The resort is perfect for families with differing abilities because there are plenty of nursery slopes and excellent multilingual ski schools yet also some more challenging routes for the experienced skiers.
The setting is beautiful. Val di Luce is particularly pretty and you’ll love skiing past the big old abandoned hotel which looks like a cross between something out of Scoobie-Doo and the Shining. Abetone experienced a tourist boom in the 1930s when engineer Lapo Farinato degli Uberti started to construct the ski resort. This huge stone hotel in the Val di Luce was the last building to be started and unfortunately the project was abandoned due to the outbreak of WWII. It is such a shame because Abetone would certainly benefit from an on slope luxury hotel.
The ski runs extend for over 50 km and across four majestic valleys so you can ski all day on different runs.
For snowboarders there is the new Abetone terrain park, a state-of-the-art facility boasting half-pipe and 10-foot jumps. It is a great place to hang out for a rest and to watch the young and fearless inevitably spending more time in the snow rather than on it.
Abetone is also one of the safest places to ski. There has never ever been an avalanche in the ski areas and you are within 15 minutes helicopter ride to the big hospital in Florence. Plus, included in the price of your ski pass is free mountain rescue so if the worst does happen you don’t necessarily have to claim on your insurance. And the very best part is that the mountain rescue team are all pretty gorgeous (silver linings and all that).
