The rich history of Forte dei Marmi
The name “Forte dei Marmi” comes from the fortress that was built in 1786, under the governance of the Tuscan Granduke, Pietro Leopoldo. A new commercial center was flourishing and there was a need to protect it from external attacks. In that time, the enemies normally came from the sea and this is why we can see the walls in the road in front of the beaches.
This explains the first part of the name Forte. But there is something else that explains Marmi and it comes from the marble of Alpi Apuane (the same mountains where the famous Carrara marble comes from). In fact before being shipped, all that marble was stocked where today is the center of Forte dei Marmi.
