It’s coming soon: the 2010 edition of the Palio of Siena, a historical and unique horse race that happens twice a year, during the summer in Tuscany.
The “Palio di Siena” dates back to the 12th Century and still today is one of the most important sports events of Tuscany. Like a Formula 1 race, or a soccer match, the Italian television shows the Palio di Siena’s race live every year.
I remember in 2009 it took so long to start the race because the horses must be in the right position for the go (and as they are animals and not machines this can be a hard task sometimes).
The entrance is free in the square (Piazza del Campo) and you can imagine that everyone wants to take the best place possible, so you should arrive early. I heard a story – I don’t know if that’s true or not – that there are people who arrive there the night before!
