Which Fish will I find in Tuscany?
Tuscany’s coast is on the Tyrrehnian sea and it is part of the Meditterranean sea. The fish you are likely to find in Tuscany and that are guaranteed to be tuscan fish are listed below. I thought it would help to have a list with the italian and english name (sometimes you get the wrong names in menus) for your meals in restaurants or in case you decide to buy fish off a boat or at the supermarket.
If there is a fish or mollusk you believe might fit in this list, feel free to write a comment here or on facebook. I have taken the most common and easy to find in a dish or at the supermarket into consideration.
- triglie – mullet
- orate – sea bream
- branzino – sea bass
- scorfano – scorpionfish
- calamari- squid
- polpo – octopus
- vongole – clams
- cozze – mussels
- sarde- sardines
- acciughe – anchovies
- seppie – cuttlefish
- gamberi – prawn
- scampi – langoustines
- aragoste – spiny lobster
- sogliole – sole
Ministry of Agriculture Helps Buyers for Free
I suggest you use this very useful service that the Ministry of Agriculture gives for free- to check if prices indicated are real and nobody is overcharging you. So if you’re at the fishmarket and decide to cook for yourself, look at the name of the fish on the tag – send an sms to the number 49747 (for free) you will receive a message that asks if you are willing to receive messages answer ok (another free message) and wait. Within minutes you will receive three prices, the first refers to the correct price for the north the second to the price the product you are requesting should have in central Italy (Tuscany) and the third to the southern part of our country.

fascinating sms service, i had no idea this existed. Is there also a website on which one can print out a table, or do the prices vary on a daily basis, making this impossible?
Hi, thanks for leaving a comment! You can use the website to get real time info on prices but you won't get anything to print because prices change constantly, that's why this number is so useful! Ciao

I found that monkfish (coda di rospo) was quite popular too around the region.
