Pesce Finto (Fake Fish)
- Potatoes 500 g.
Canned tuna, drained from its oil 250 g.
Mayonnaise, as much as you will need to cover
Olives (without pit) 50 g.
Salt & pepper
Boil potatoes (unpeeled) in salted water, peel them once they’re cold and mash them.
Place the tuna in a bowl and crush it into pieces with a fork, mix in with potatoes. Add the parsley after you have chopped it up and finally a pinch of salt and pepper.
Mix all these ingredients well. Take a serving dish that’s flat and wide and give your mix a fish shape. Make sure the dish is clean all around the fish.
At this point, you can chose to make your own Mayo or use the ready kind.
Cover the surface of your fake fish with mayo.
and use the capers and olives to decorate it, make the eyes with the olives and make the wavy scales with the capers…use your imagination!
This dish was typically served on Fridays, when the church ordered the vigil or better a day when no meat was allowed. Fake Fish was good, not expensive and filled everyone up thanks to the potatoes. Nowadays you can also serve it as a starter
