Out of the three main reasons for which saffron is also known as powder gold, is the fact that each pistil contains the smallest quantity of saffron and each bulb produces a flower which blooms only between october and november for just two weeks. Saffron has a long and important history and Tuscany, San Gimignano, more specifically has obtained the IGP designation for its saffron and in the 13th century payed part of its debts with saffron! There’s also a great food itinerary around Tuscany’s Manhattan that you might want to follow!
