There are certain products around Tuscany that belong to a specific area and have obtained a European Designation. This guarantee labeled as a DOP or IGP. Here is our Google Map of Typical Tuscan Foods.

Monte Amiata Chestnut (IGP) – The Monte Amiata has obtained an IGP for its chestnuts – the Mount Amiata area is the only  mountain in southern Tuscany and, at 1736m, the highest extinct volcano in Italy.

Sorana Bean (IGP) – The Sorana bean has obtained the IGP designation thatnks to its properties.  It is a small, thin-skinned bean belonging to the cannellino variety. When it is properly cooked, the skin becomes disolves completely blends with the pulp.
Make sure you visit the area and try a delicious dish (stew-soup or simple crostini) in one of the restaurants in the area surrounding Sorana.

Chestnut Flour from Garfagnana (DOP)Chestnut Farina (flour) di Neccio from Garfagnana. (DOP) The use of chestnut flour in cooking goes back centuries and has its origins in the town of Garfagnana. In this mountainous area it has always been used just like normal flour made from grain is used in the plains lower down. The chestnut tree is therefore locally known as the ‘bread tree’ and its fruits, the chestnuts, as ‘tree bread’.

Chestnut from Mugello (IGP)  – Another famous chestnut comes from the Mugello area – it is special because it is very sweet. Easily digested and rich in anti oxidants, it is used in tuscan cuisine very often.

Chestnut from Caprese Michelangelo DOP -  Whether boiled, raw, roasted, dried or processed into flour or jam, chestnuts have always been an important food that’s characteristic of the lifestyle and cuisine of the Valtiberina territory.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Lucca DOP – The oil coming from the hills around Lucca that has earned this designation has a unique flavour, both intense, fruity, sweet and sharp at the same time. It’s easily recognizable when compared to other oils from around the region.

Saffron from San Gimignano DOP -  The saffron of San Gimignano is extremely pure. It is produced naturally and no chemical products are used in any step of its cultivation, drying and conservation. The saffron stamens are packaged whole in order to guarantee their pure quality as well as to protect their strong pungent and slightly bitter aroma.

Ricciarelli from Siena IGP – Ricciarelli are white, soft, moist and extremely sweet boat-shaped almond pastries covered with white icing sugar. They have a rough surface.
