aneyeforwineIn Italy there are only 36 wines that are corked and later appreciated as DOCG labels- keep in mind there are 20 regions! In this post after a brief explanation on what a DOCG label is I wanted to underline the fact that of the 36 prestigious bottles boasting this label 17 are tuscan, if you want to know which ones they are so that during your stay you can be sure you’re spending the right amount of money for a great wine in a restaurant, keep this list handy!

The need for a DOCG identification arose when the DOC (controlled origin denomination) was in the view of the italian food industry given too easily to different products. A new, more restrictive identification was then created, as similar as possible to the previous one so that buyers could still recognize it, but of superior quality.

A notable difference for wines is that DOCG (controlled and guaranteed origin denomination)  labelled wines are analysed and tasted by government–licensed staff before being bottled. To prevent later manipulation, DOCG wine bottles then are sealed with a numbered governmental seal across the cap or cork.

At a first glance you might think there are doubles of each name, the truth is that there’s a magic word “Riserva” gives these already excellent wines an extra two years aging time.
