Chianti vs Chianti Classico

Do you know the difference between Chianti and Chianti Classico?

Even if they are produced in Tuscany not all Chianti are the same! Chianti and Chianti Classico, are two different and separate DOCG (Designation of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin), with two different areas of production, characteristics and consortia responsible for the quality of the wine. In addition to this, according to the area of production, you can find 7 kinds of Chianti DOCG (as normale or riserva).

Chianti Classico  is made in the area between Florence and Siena, known as the Chianti area, specifically in Barberino Val d’Elsa, Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Gaiole in Chianti, Greve in Chianti, Poggibonsi, Radda in Chianti, San Casciano Val di Pesa and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. On Chianti Classico bottles you can find the black rooster symbol. Chianti Classico is made from 80% to 100% Sangiovese grapes and other red grapes as  Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Chianti wine is made in a vast area located in the provinces of Arezzo, Florence, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena. Today, it’s one of the most important symbols of Italy worldwide.

According to the area of production, you can find 7 kinds of Chianti DOCG (as normale or riserva):

- Colli Aretini,
- Colli Senesi,
- Colli Fiorentini,
- Colline Pisane,
- Montalbano,
- Montespertoli,
- Rufina.

Chianti is made from 70% to 100% Sangiovese and other red and white specific grape varieties (no more than 10% white grapes and a maximum of 15% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon).
