August is the month of music in Tuscany!

A musical summer with Italian and international stars

Jazz, indie, and popular music: only the most talented of musicians will come together in Tuscany for a series of live performances that will span cities and hamlets, from the shores of the Massaciuccoli Lake to the piazzas of the Maremma. 



Rispescia, located in the province of Grosseto, will be the host of Festambiente (Aug. 10-19), the series of events dedicated to the celebration and preservation of the ecosystem, bringing Italian and international artists onto a single stage. Beginning Friday, August 10, singer and poet Vinicio Capossela will perform with his band of Greek musicians with whom he will perform pieces from his newest project, “Rebetiko Gymnastas”, which will revisit some of his most celebrated songs inspired by the Greek traditional harmonies.

Saturday, August 11 will see one of the most highly esteemed Italian singer-songwriters Francesco De Gregori, while on Monday, August 13 is the turn of the insurmountable P.F.M. and Tuesday August 14 the warm voice of Fiorella Mannoia who will sing her “Sud”, an album that pays homage to the Southlands. On Thursday, August 16 space will be given to Italian rock music, specifically the band the Afterhours, who have made a splash with their latest album “Padania” mixing private and public demons, trying to tell the stories of the social tensions and the crisis on a global scale. Friday, August 17 Ripescia dances to the tunes of Caparezza, while on Sunday, August 19 will see a grand finale with the Balkan rhythms by Goran Bregovic. This year the Garfagnana will host big names at the Barga Jazz Festival, scheduled to take place August 17-25. This year’s edition is dedicated to the music of Sun Ra, one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. Special guests include Gianluca Petrella, a talented musician emerging in the Italian jazz scene, performing on August 24 and 25. Saturday August 18, a concert not to be missed by the Gegé Telesforo Group,  while on Thursday, August 23 at the piazzale del Fosso one of the most anticipated events of the festival will take place with Stefano Bollani e i Visionari. This marks the artist’s return to his origins as he has been part of the orchestra of BargaJazz for several of the festival’s seasons in 1991-1995. An eclectic and rich lineup of jazz standards, taking place August 2 – 24 in the hamlets and theaters of the Maremma as part of the Grey Cat Jazz Festival. On August 2 the castle in Scarlino will host Paolo Fresu, his trumpet and his Devil Quartet, while on Friday, August 3 at the Teatro Le Ferriere in Follonica it is the turn of the Brazilian musical duo made up of Stefano Bollani and Hamilton de Hollanda.

On Wednesday, August 8 at the Cava di Roselle in Grosseto the Israeli singer Noa pays tribute to Italy with her solo project “Noapolis”, while on Saturday August 11 in Gavorrano we let loose with the swinging tunes of Gatti Mèzzi and Matti delle Giuncaie. An evening not to be missed, August 4 in Castelnuovo Val di Cecina with the Daniele Malvisi Quartet, with the extraordinary participation by Danilo Rea,while on Sunday, August 12 at the Teatro Le Ferriere in Follonica will see the Brazilian singer Tania Maria and on August 18 in Massa Marittima Stefano Cantini and his project “Living Coltrane” as presented by Enrico Rava. For opera lovers, the Puccini Festival will last until August 27 at Torre del Lago (Lucca), along the shores of the Massaciuccoli lake where Giacomo Puccini lived and composed much of his work. Three Puccinian operas, as well as La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, will be performed on August 4, 11 and 18. Tosca will take the stage on August 3, 16 and 25 set before the traditional designs by Antonio Mastromattei and costumes curated by the Fondazione Cerratelli, while on the 10 and 17 of August will see the turn of Madama Butterfly with sets designed by Japanese sculptor Kan Yasuda and directed by Vivien Alexandra Hewitt. To close the trio of Puccini masterpieces is La Bohème (August 9, 19 and 24) with the artistic direction by Maurizio Di Mattia. (For more information please visit: www.puccinifestival.it).



Cecina E-Motion (until August 19) will bring famous Italian musicians to the coast of the Etruscans. Among all these events, not to be missed is the concert by Antonella Ruggiero and her repertoir on August 8 while on Sunday August 12, Gino Paoli e Danilo Rea pay their tribute to traditional Neapolitan music. A unique scenario is that of the Festival della Valdorcia (August 14), a festival that will animate the historic centers and hamlets of Pienza and Montalino, two UNESCO world heritage sites. Several events not to be missed are the duet formed by the actress Violante Placido and Lele Battista (Bagno Vignoni, August 4), a performance by the duo from Pisa known as the Gatti Mèzzi (Castiglione d’Orcia, August 12), and finally Davide Van de Sfroos who will perform his summer hits in San Quirico d’Orcia, August 13. In La Versiliana in Marina di Pietrasanta (Lucca) a month of great concerts: On August 8 Roberto Vecchioni will take the stage, Renzo Arbore together with the Orchestra Italiana will take the stage on August 10 and on August 20 the P.F.M. On August 22 will be the turn of the singer-songwriter from Livorno Bobo Rondelli together with the pisan Gatti Mèzzi, while on August 25 will be the turn of Paolo Conte. (For more information please visit: www.laversilianafestival.it ).
