Mugello: the festival of chestnuts

Marradi celebrates the king of autumn

In Upper Mugello the 9th, 16th and 30th October, will be Marradi’s 48th festival of the chestnut. There is always plenty of food at the festival including local delicacies such as ravioli, cakes, jams, marrons glacés , and roasted chestnuts and space too for traditional products deriving from the forest, as well as crafts and commercial products.

To liven up the events, there will also be live performing musicians, and street artists as well as plenty of attractions for children, for 4 Sundays. For the occasion a special postal stamp has been issued, and local museums will waive their entry fees. There is an exhibition on furniture made from chestnut wood, The Centre for the Study and Documentation of Chestnuts, Artists for Dino Campana” and the Centre for the Study of Dino Campana, which has exhibitions on contemporary art dedicated to the poet from Marradi.

On the same dates the Medieval village of Palazzuolo Sul Senio will be brighten up by the “Festival of Browns and Berries”. While in Firenzuola on 9th and 16th October, there will be a celebration of stone craft called “From the Woods and From Stone”, in which they will display products from the forest, and precious stone crafts.

There are more opportunities to experience the flavours of valley. On 8th and 9th October Dicomano will host a traditional “October Festival”. On 9th and 16th October in Vicchio there is the autumnal “Festival of Brown”, while on 15th and 16th October in San Piero a Sieve there is another autumn festival celebrating typical products.

Alongside these gastronomic celebrations there is a special exhibition at the Museum of Manifattura Chini at the Villa Pecori Giraldi in Borgo San Lorenzo entitled “Images of Mugello: comparing two centuries, vintage and current photos.” The exhibition highlights how the area has visibly changed, and there is a section dedicated to the Manifattura Chini. It also explores the range of cameras from old wooden ones to modern digital machines. The show is open from Thursday to Sundays and public holidays, between 9-13:00. There are guided tours at the weekends at 10:30 and 16:30. Entry is 3 euro.

On 15th and 16th October a show illustrating how traditional food has spanned over two hundred years. It will take place in the Villa Pecori Giraldi - where you can sample the prepared local dishes along with beers and wines from the area. Artusi wrote a book on cooking and eating in the 19th century, so they’re dedicating a show on his influence on the cuisine of Mugello valley-which is near Firenze.

HOW TO GET THERE
These events all take place along the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. There is the scenic route via the Passo della Colla, Passo del Giogo e della Futa. By car from Firenzuola, continue for San Pellegrino, Coloniale and Tirli and after about 30km with very little traffic you’ll reach Palazzuolo sul Senio. From Palazzuolo sul Senio Marradi is 12 km drive. Alternatively you can reach Marradi by train from Florence or Faenza, from where, to mark the special “season” a special steam train will travel the same route on 9th and 16th October.

From Florence instead you can take the line via Pontassieve to Vicchio.Once you have tasted the roasted chestnuts and typical products, it is possible to continue by train to Borgo San Lorenzo to visit the Exhition of Manufacturing China (see above), and to return to Florence along the Faenza train line.
