To commemorate the 500th anniversary of Giorgio Vasari’s birth, the city of Arezzo will be presenting two large-scale exhibitions highlighting the multifaceted nature of his life and works.
From September 3 2011, expect the presentation of particularly significant newly restored works. On show until December 11, 2011, the exhibition will be hosted at the Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art in Arezzo. The exhibition provides a chronological overview while showcasing the painter’s stylistic evolution in both painting and drawing. Visitors will be able to enjoy a vast selection of preparatory drawings and an original letter (1560) written to Cosimo I by Michelangelo, on loan from the Florentine State Archives. In it letter, Michelangelo expresses his positive opinion about Vasari’s project for Palazzo Vecchio.
The second exhibition, on show at the Basilica di San Francesco from September 4th, will spotlight the work of Tuscan masters and their role in Vasari’s Lifes. The show spotlights artists that Vasari considered forerunners of modern painting styles.
