Once loved by the Etruscans and the ancient Romans, this spa became famous among European nobility in 1743, when the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Francesco Stefano of Lorena, made it his summer residence. It became a fashionable place to see and be seen with important guests such as Gustav of Sweden, George IV of England, Vittorio Alfieri, Percy B. and Mary Shelley, Ibrahim Pascià, the Cardinal of York and Carlo Goldoni. The eighteenth century building was restructured in 2004, a process which uncovered frescoed ceilings and all the original splendour of the 70 rooms. Guests can relax in the American ‘Shelley’ bar and enjoy low calorie meals at the à la carte restaurant. The Well-being Centre within the hotel is minimalist in style although still respects the eighteenth century architecture of the original spa building. Here clients can choose between relaxing Oriental and classic massage, beauty treatments, sip healthy infusions in the Relaxation Room, do acqua-gym or try an Oriental Watsu massage in the thermal pool.
