The “Stanze del desiderio” (Rooms of Desire) exhibition encompasses nearly 300 drawings—including panels, story boards and original illustrations—videos, installations and various other contributions that highlight the work of Milo Manara. The exhibition takes place from October 1 to April 9, 2012 at the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex in Siena. Promoted by the City of Siena and Monte dei Paschi Foundation, Stanze is created by Vernice Cultural Projects. Exhibit organizers call it “a sensorial journey through the forty-year career” of the celebrated cartoonist; an homage to the master of eroticism and to one of the most famous illustrators in the world, featuring “never before seen pieces regarding important collaborations with maestros, directors and actors from yesterday and today.”
The exhibit, “without being a chronological or educational journey”, seeks to offer “a more extensive way of reading Manara’s boundless production.” Visitors will explore “rooms” that will allow them to come into contact with the most important themes in the Verona native’s work. Audio, video, digital images and of course his original drawings and story boards take the visitor through everything from his alter ego Giuseppe Bergman to two of the most important professional and personal references for the artist, Hugo Pratt and Federico Fellini. Two of Manara’s unique heroines, Claudia and Miele, will also be on hand.
There will be rooms for the historic fresco dedicated to the Borgia family, as well as a “forbidden” room that will feature the most explicit of Manara’s images together with the canvas series dedicated to the “Model.” Also on display are press and advertising images, book and magazine covers and the most recent “short stories” and comic strips.
