Fishing and Surfcasting in Viareggio

Indulge your passion for fishing

The coastline between Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi is an excellent fishing area. The formation of the coast allows visitors to indulge in all types of deep-sea fishing year-round with excellent results. Strolling along the pier at Viareggio, near the local "passeggiata," Via Margherita, or climbing the rocks near Darsena you will frequently find fishermen who spend hours togethe thanks to their passion for the sport, their friendships, and their love of the sea.

Surfcasting
Surfcasting means to  "cast beyond the waves." The technique was born in Florida around the beginning of the 1900s thanks to a group of fishermen who found a system for catching large predatory fish from the banks by using live fish as bait with basic fishing equipment. Rough seas are an exception in the Mediterranean which has lead surf casters to modify their technique, using bottom-feeders instead of predatory fish. True surf casting presupposes big waves which create good conditions for the fishing because the turbulence causes food to rise up from the bottom of the sea attracting a variety of fish toward the coast. The sea off the coast of Italy is quite different from the ocean, where the depth and pressure favour turbulent behaviour, so here it is necessary to take advantage of weather conditions to practice this fishing technique.
