The Irish football team, coached by Italian Giovanni Trapattoni, will hold its pre-European championship retreat in Montecatini. The agreement was made betwen the Football Association of Ireland and the Assessor for Sport and Manager of FIFA, Stefano Pucci. The team coached by Trapattoni will play Italy on June 18 in Poznan, Poland, but will be in the thermal city from May 27-June 3. There are numerous initiatives in the city to welcome the Irish fans, including the following.
Green City. The city will be illuminated in green lights in three main parts of the city: Terme Tettuccio, Palazzo comunale, and the cablecar that connects the spa to the high part of the town.
Green Windows. A competition to see who can decorate their windows best will take place between May 27-June 3, with a prize being given on June 2.
Irlanda-Montecatini Terme “Eat and Drink”. A collaborative effort between the Irish Food Board and the town bring unique menus to some of the city's restaurants, including: Enoteca da Giovanni, Egisto, San Francisco, Gambrinus Bar, La Cascina, La Pecora Nera.
“Temporary street Irish Pub”.“The Hope Store” will be in piazza and offer all the best Irish beverages.
Green Re-cycling. The city will continue its efforts to save the environment by encouraging recycling. There will also be 20 salvaged, green bicycles available for use in and around town.
Green Kiosk. There will be a Irish Tourism office with large screen TV showing films related to sport and tourism in Ireland.
“Casa Irlanda” will be located at Terme Tamerici from June 1-June 3. There will be an area for Irish tourists and journalists, with foods provided by the Irish Food Board.
