The Versilia region needs no introduction: its famed beaches, charming mountains and bustling night life all make it an attractive and much visited area in Italy… but perhaps not everyone knows that the Versilia region is also the hot spot for surfing in the Mediterranean. It is precisely here, in Viareggio, that beginning in the early ‘80’s the first Italian surf club was born (Italia Wave Surf Team). The first surf shop opened its doors and the firs competitions were held at the national level. One of the pioneers of Italian surf is Alessandro Dini, who manages a surf school located within a beach resort, known as the B2K Balena 2000, offering lessons for beginners and more advanced surfers.
The B2K is a high-tech sport center equipped with three pools, a magnificent gym located on the beach, a wellness center and spa, rooms dedicated to spinning, yoga, karate and a restaurant, all within walking distance from the famed promenade. Athletes such as Marcello Lippi, the manager of the national Italian soccer team, and the referee Pierluigi Collina go there frequently to work out.
Alessandro Dini is proud of his title as surfing instructor and of his gym along Versilia’s beach (he is the only licensed figure to train surfing instructors in all of Italy, authorized by the International Surfing Association). At B2K, interested beginners can approach the sport of surfing in a safe and fun way thanks to the advanced equipment and facilities of the gym. Dini relies on the expertise of local surfers among whom Claudio Chelotti as faithful instructor. Surf lessons can be conducted privately or in a small group. The surf boards are 100% “soft” meaning made of softer material, and the flippers or fins are made of non-scratch plastic. Every one can learn to surf: it’s fun, challenging, and rewarding. Suggested age is 6 and up.
