In the Summer months, the sea around the islands off the Tuscan coast is busier than the region’s great historic cities. More and more people now practice scuba diving. In Tuscany there are about 50 dive centres between Livorno and Argentario, including the archipelago. There are 15 on the Island of Elba and 10 in Argentario and on the Island of Giglio. This is probably the most popular diving area in the whole Mediterranean sea. The diving ‘season’ starts at Easter and reaches its peak between June and September.
Most of the people who come to dive here are either from the centre/north of Italy or northern Europe. Most dive centres take divers out to the best spots on boats that can carry up to 12/15 divers at a time. Its also often possible to take diving lessons.Divers visiting the region can stay in one of the many hotels, agriturismi, tourist villages or bed and breakfasts near the coast. Diving is also no more expensive than skiing and in fact it’s possible to buy all the basic equipment for around €700/€800.
A two hour submersion with gas tanks, a guide and transport can vary in price between €25/€35 per person, depending on the distance to the dive site. A first level course to obtain a licence to dive to a depth of 18m costs around €300.
