Tuscany is a great region for winter sports. Abetone, for example, has 50kms of slopes. As well as skiing and snowboarding, you can also do cross country skiing on a 15km long track. There are many ski resorts throughout the Abetone area, including Doganaccia between Corno alle Scale and Monte Libero Aperto where it’s possible to have a go on a bob sleigh.
There are also special areas for disabled skiers with reserved parking areas, chalets and changing rooms, as well as qualified ski instructors with specialised equipment that allow disabled skiers complete autonomy. Away from the Abetone region, it’s also possible to ski in Tuscany on Monte Amiata from 4 resorts called Prato della Contessa, il Prato delle Macinaie, la Marsiliana and the Cantore refuge. On Monte Amiata there are 25kms of slopes and 12kms of cross country skiing tracks. When there is a lot of snow it’s possible to go on excursions into the Amiata forest.
In the Lunigiana region, the best skiing can be had at Zum Zeri, on the border with Liguria and Emilia Romagna. There are 9 slopes, a children’s play area, 3 ski lifts and an area for snowboarding. In the Garfagnana mountains, skiers should head to Careggine, Passo delle Radici and Casone di Profecchia. Careggine is the best place for less experienced skiers, thanks to its wide slopes. The area’s natural beauty provides the perfect backdrop for a day of Winter sports and the local cuisine is excellent.
Overall, Tuscany offers a great deal of possibilities to all kinds of winter sport lovers. There’s something for everyone: young, old, families and disabled sportsmen and women. Tuscany really is the ideal holiday location with its warm, sunny summers and crisp, snow filled winters.
