Since 1980, the uniqueness of the event and the poor circulation of concerts around Italy has meant that the famous stage in Piazza Duomo that is the backdrop for Pistoia Blues has an enormous impact and following. The Festival welcomes with enthusiasm great interpreters and legends of European rock and blues such as Jimmy Page, Rory Gallagher, Brian Auger, BB King. Other stars include the Briton John Mayall, Pat Metheny and John McLaughlin with their masterful interpretations, the performances of two great artists such as Buddy Guy and Junior Wells and the overpowering Luther Allison. An important consideration is the twinning of the Festival with that of the city of Chicago, a fact which has brought many artists from the famous Amercian Metropolis to Pistoia, from Jimmy Johnson to Albert Collins and Lonnie Brooks, from the young Valery Wellington to the mighty Koko Taylor, and the one great visit to Pistoia of John Lee Hooker. Also worthy of note is the enthralling performance of the albino Winter, as too the duet of Ron Wood and Bo Diddley and the memorable concert of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Italian artists of this genre of music appearing in Pistoia include Roberto Ciotti and Pino Daniele, who is by now considered a veteran of Pistoia Blues. For 27 years the greatest international names vie with each other to perform on the stage of what has become over the years an occasion for music enthusiasts not to be missed.
