Born in 1986, BargaJazz Festival focuses on original scores and musical arrangements for jazz orchestra, dedicated this year to the music of Sun Ra, leading world jazz musician. In honor of the 2012 edition the orchestra of Barga will host one of the most appreciated contemporary Italian jazz musicians, Gianluca Petrella.
For Petrella, Sun Ra is not an unfamiliar name, given that the trombonist has frequently come into contact with the music of Sun Ra, making him one of his principal sources of inspiration. In Barga, Petrella will play unedited arrangements as a soloist together with the BargaJazz Orchestra, directed by Bruno Tommaso.
The Inauguration ceremony will take place on Friday, August 17 at 9:30PM in Piazza Angelio and will commence with a concert by the Dinamitri Jazz Folklore, a collective from Livorno headed by Dimitri Grechi Espinoza on saxophone.
Saturday 18 will be the turn of the Gegé Telesforo Group. A collective concert of highest standards, performances on the stage set up at the piazzale del Fosso, able to seat 1000 people.
On Sunday 19 will see the Barga IN Jazz, the jazz parties through the streets of the historic center of Barga: beginning at 5:00PM with the explosive P-Funking Band while simultaneous perfromances by 7 local bands in various piazzas in the city. And if this wasn’t enough, at 6:00PM in the piazza of the Duomo di S. Cristoforo, a concert for Eufonio solo by Nicolao Valiensi. At 9:00PM, in the piazzale del Fosso a concert by Karima Ammar with her jazz project.
On Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 a performance by the four finalist bands of the Barga Jazz Contest will perform at Villa Moorings: Else! Jazz trio, Fabio Giachino Trio, To Book A Rest Quintet and Tommaso Starace Quartet.
Still at Villa Moorings, on Wednesday 22 at 9:30PM, Mario Raja Quartet.
Thursday 23 at piazzale del Fosso, one of the most anticipated events of the festival sees Stefano Bollani and i Visionari, a celebrated return to Barga for Stefano who has been part of the orchestra of BargaJazz for several editions between ’91 and ’95.
Friday 24 and Saturday 25 the evenings are painted with the XXV edition of the international contest for arrangement and composition for Orchestra Jazz who will see as main protagonist the BargaJazz Orchestra directed by Bruno Tommaso. Guest of honor is Gianluca Petrella.
From the 17 to the 25 of August, at Villa Moorings Hotel, 7:00PM a Jazz Dinner hosted by the restaurant Scacciaguai and with live jazz standards beginning at 12:00AM with “Enojazz”, live jam sessions by the festival’s participants.
