This exhibit is a response to the damage caused to the Palazzo Massari art gallery in Ferrara, home to nineteenth century art collections and the Filippo de Pisis Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, during the earthquake which hit Emilia Romagna in May 2012. Many of the works from this museum will be temporarily housed in Florence.
At Villa Bardini 26 works document the Ferrara collections, starting from the Romantics including Gaetano Turchi, Massimiliano Lodi, Girolamo Domenichini and Giovanni Pagliarini, followed by self portraits from leading local artists – from Giuseppe Mentessi to Giovanni Boldini – and the symbolism of Gaetano Previati with his masterpiece Paolo and Francesca (1909), based on Dante’s work. Of particular importance are portraits by the great Giovanni Boldini.
The Gallery of Modern Art in the Pitti Palace will house 35 works, both paintings and sculpture, from the literary symbolism of Giovanni Muzzioli and Gaetano Previati to the melancholy allegorical sculptures of Angelo Conti and Arrigo Minerbi. Three masterpieces by Giovanni Boldini are on display here: two still lifes and his work Marina in Venice. Also included are works by Giuseppe Mentessi and a view of Charing Cross bridge in London by Alberto Pisa.
To document the transition to futurism is a painting by Arnoldo Bonzagni and a bronze work by Annibale Zucchini, while the revival of classical traditions is represented by Achille Funi’s Portrait of a sister (1921). There will also be works by Mario Sironi and Roberto Melli.
This tribute to the twentieth century will end with one of the most important artistic collections – that of the poet Filippo De Pisis - telling the story of the artist through his still lifes, portraits and views of Paris.
