The 'Genio Fiorentino' was founded in the spring of 2005 as a celebration rich with events organised in the places where genius personalities such as Dante, Boccaccio, Giotto, Vespucci, Leonardo, Meucci, etc. were born. The initiatives arose from the wish to discover more and divulge more about the life and works of these exceptional characters, but also in order to explore new challenges for the future. In 2005 there were 101 events that took place from the fifteenth of May until the seventh of June , not only in the town of Florence but also in the communes scattered around.
The 2006 edition of the Genio Fiorentino was presented with the title "fatti non foste a viver come bruti…" (Divine Comedy XXVI canto dell'Inferno), a phrase which aimed at provoking both the Florentine citizen and the tourist of today. The manifestation, which took place from the 22nd April to the 22nd May involved the county town of Florence but also its 44 communes, providing a variety of events including conventions, debates, theatrical performances, concerts, exhibitions, film shows, museum visits, editorial presentations and food-and-wine connoisseurship. This is precisely the unique element that the 'Genio Fiorentino' offers, that is, the capacity to concentrate in a few weeks many different cultural manifestations among other events, distributed over the whole territory of the province.
