Young fashion and product designers from around the world are invited to participate in the “Made in Cardato Contest” promoted by the Camera di Commercio di Prato (Chamber of Commerce of Prato) with the collaboration of the Consortium for the promotion and protection of Cardato textiles and with the organizational help of the Museo del Tessuto (Prato Textile Museum).
The aim of this contest is to promote the use of Cardato Regenerated CO2 Neutral - the first textile product to be certified “zero-emission” thanks to producers’ purchase of carbon credits to offset pollution caused during the manufacture of fabrics. Cardato is “green”: it’s fabric and yarn made through recycling old wool products and remnants from the manufacturing process.
Designers aged 18-30 have until June 30, 2011 to enter the contest on the website www.cardato.com/contest and then submit their proposal for a brilliant new way to use Cardato fibres, fabrics or yarn. There are two areas in which to participate: fashion design (for clothing and accessories) and product/interior design (for anything from furniture to office or home accessories).
Submissions will be evaluated based on creativity, the sustainablity of the final product, and on the use of Cardato primary materials. Semi-finalists will invited to spend five all-expense-paid days in Prato, Tuscany, where they will learn about the textile industry, meet with important designers and producers, and develop their concepts and prototypes. In December 2011, one grand prize winner will be chosen in each field and awarded 2,500 euros.
Carlo Longo, president of the Camera di Commercio di Prato states: "Young people can bring [to Prato] ideas and opportunities, because they are very conscious of trends in this [sustainable] market.”
