Costa degli Etruschi Tourist Information Office
Point of departure and arrival: La Sterpaia (or Carlappiano) car park
Distance: 4 km
Duration: 4 hours on foot, 1 hour and 40 minutes by mountain bike
Trail type: dirt roads
Elevation: N/A
Difficulty: easy
Note: Suitable for families with children, the itinerary can also be cycled. The stretch along the coast provides services and facilities for the disabled (who can get to the bridge over the canal by car). The departure point is easily reached by leaving the SS1 Variante Aurelia at the Vignale-Riotorto junction and carrying on towards Piombino: after 2 k turn off to the left to “Parco della Sterpaia”.
Leaving the car park, you take the tarmac road and turn right. After 200 meters, turn right again onto the dirt road that runs past the Sterpaia protected area on the left (open to visitors, tel. 0565.226445). Go past a barrier and after a short distance you will find information panels with facts about the area’s environment and natural features. The road runs past a cultivated area on the right. Turn right before the big eucalyptus tree onto a little road marked by two pine trees and which runs through dense vegetation (1.4 km from the start).
At the end of the road, you cross a bridge over the Fosso Cervia and bear left onto another dirt road and follow the canal. After about 200 meters the road bends to the right away from the canal, and after another 200 meters, you come to a crossroads where you keep to the right, following the main trail. After 50 meters (2.3 km from the departure), go right again at the next fork onto a track that runs through a pinewood parallel to the coast (on your left). This trail connects with all the pedestrian accesses to the beach which are identified by the letter A and a number. You are now at point A17. After a short while you come to an area which provides various facilities with disabled access (car park, seasonal bar-restaurant, toilets).
Past the bar, the road bends right (you can see the bridge over the Fosso Cervia at the end): after a short distance, take the first left and follow the trail that runs behind the dunes between access points A12 and A4 where there are a number of equipped picnic areas, and turn right to return to the car park, the itinerary departure and arrival point.
