Next to these sets of events, the survey of “NARRATIVE ARCHAEOLOGY”, proposed and organized by the National Archaeological Museum of Florence and by the Foundation Toscana Spettacolo, proposes a journey on the foot-trails of theater and music, conjoining the poetry of performance with archaeology and creating a magical environment in which to revisit suggestive places of the mind and of the spirit. The locations in which special literary events will take place are the National Archaeological museum of Florence which on July 3rd and 4th will host Ovid’s Metamorphosis, in Pisa the Arsenali Medicei will host the Odyssey on July 14th and In Siena on July 19th at Santa Maria della Scala will see the performance of Zoe.
The Nights of 2012 not only include theater, music and dance, but also cinema! In Pisa in the Scotto Gardens, from July 5th – 7th a preview of films in the festival “CIAK – 1° INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL FOR ARCHEOLOGICAL CINEMA”, a special event organized in collaboration with the magazine “Archeologia Viva” and with the State Musuem of Rovereto – a review of International films about Archaeology. Every night for the three nights of the Festival, internationally selected documentaries pertaining to archaeology will be shown. During the breaks between one film and another, several keynote speakers will intervene on topics pertaining to archaeology and will be interviewed by Piero Pruneti. To highlight is the last evening in which Valerio Massimo Manfredi, author of Aléxandros, will be present.
The works shown document a vast array of sites and places: from the Italo-Etruscan world to Greek civilization, from the Roman capital to the ancient Anatolian metropolises, up to the ancient civilizations of the Peruvian desert and the Land of Fire.
Each evening, audiences will vote for their favorite documentary or film on ballot cards provided. The winner of the festival will receive the “Archaeological Nights 2012 Prize” at the closing ceremony of the film festival. There will be a special “archaeological bus” in occasion of the last day of the festival which will offer free shuttle transportation from Florence to Pisa.
Furthermore, this year’s “Archaeological Nights” will include the ARCHEOFEST that will animate the Sienese territory and take place in the Val di Chiana and the surrounding area around Chianciano: a land rich in culture and archaeological treasures ranging from the Middle Ages to Etruscan, Roman and Pre-historic periods.
ArcheoFest is born with the aim to publicize and bring attention to the artistic and historical heritage of the lands of Chiusi, Chianciano Terme, Sarteano, Montepulciano, Cetona, Trequanda. (www.archeofest.it). Among the long list of initiatives and organized events, we highlight “Fragments”, a series of theatrics and performance pieces which will take place at both the archaeological digs of Frascole in Dicomano (FI) and within the Palazzo Vecchio Museum in Florence.
In the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia at Piombino (LI) the spotlight is given to the “Etruscan Night”, an animated visit with dialogues on the lives and stories of Etruscan and Roman women; in the Archaeological Area of Ghiaccio Forte, near Scansano (GR) at 6:00 AM, the evocative “Concert at Dawn”, while at the Archaeological Park of Villa Romana of San Vincenzino in Cecina (LI), the concert “Music in the Tank”.
In Peccioli (PI), the theatrical performance “the dream of Ipazia” narrates the last day of the life of the first woman scientist, astronomer and philosopher of Alexandria, assassinated in 415 A.C. Poggibonsi (SI) will host the mise en espace of the text in octets “Castigarla spero” by Giuseppe Moroni, also cknown as Niccheri, as well as tours guided by narrators in medieval costume. In Sarteano (SI) the local museum will be the set for an original performance “Infernal presence”, inspired by the rediscovery of the local Tomb of the Infernal Quadriga.
