'Arte torna arte' ('Art Becomes Art') is the name of this exhibition and a phrase coined by Luciano Fabro following a series of lectures and conference he held between 1981 and 1997 in universities, academies and museums across the world. Using this phrase as the title of an exhibition at the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence highlights his belief that all art, despite its varying nature, comes from the same place.
In works of art by great artists, the idea that there is a continual re-thinking and re-working of art doesn't simply lead to the creation of nostalgic pieces. Rather than copying or creating similar works of art, artists are able to come up with profoundly innovative ideas. This exhibition takes a look at the history of art and iconography in art and shows how they are in fact the perfect source of inspiration for artists.
The exhibition is to be held in the Galleria dell'Accademia, home to the statue of David, the Prigioni by Michelangelo and a vast collection of Medieval and Renaissance Florentine art. This makes it the perfect place to open a dialogue between works of art from the past and more contemporary pieces. Visitors will be continually confronted by the past and the present side-by-side. In fact, part of this exhibition will be displayed in separate rooms, but part of it will be placed alongside the gallery's permanent collections, in order to highlight the more modern works from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
Modern artists whose work will be on display include: Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Alberto Burri, Antonio Catelani, Martin Creed, Gino De Dominicis, Rineke Dijkstra, Marcel Duchamp, Luciano Fabro, Hans Peter Feldmann, Luigi Ghirri, Antony Gormley, Yves Klein, Jannis Kounellis, Ketty La Rocca, Leoncillo, Sol Le Witt, Eliseo Mattiacci, Olaf Nicolai, Luigi Ontani, Giulio Paolini, Claudio Parmiggiani, Giuseppe Penone, Pablo Picasso, Alfredo Pirri, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Renato Ranaldi, Alberto Savinio, Thomas Struth, Fiona Tan, Bill Viola and Andy Warhol.
There will also be a series of related events such as talks with the artists, concerts, films and performances in order to examine the themes raised by the exhibition in more depth.
