June in Pisa: the city comes alive!

A month of events in the city of the Leaning Tower

Over 100 events make up the Pisan June Festival, which is organized by the city of Pisa and its institutions, associations, sporting clubs and publishing companies.

The Palio di San Ranieri will take place on June 17 and the June 30 finale. The city of Pisa celebrates its patron saint's day, San Ranieri, on 17th June. To mark this event every year on the evening of the 17th, the city's four historic districts race each other in a regata on the river Arno. This tradition dates back to when Pisa was a Maritime Republic.

There will also be the famed Gioco del Ponte. In Pisa, on the last Sunday in June, the Tramontana and Mezzogiorno factions of the city challenge each other directly on the Ponte di Mezzo bridge. The origin of the “Gioco del Ponte” (or Game on the Bridge) has its roots in ancient medieval war games. Such a challenge, played out on the Ponte di Mezzo bridge, was recorded in a XVI century manuscript describing a confrontation that occurred between the two factions into which the city was divided by the river Arno: the Tramontana and Mezzogiorno. The game is proceeded by a historic parade featuring over 700 people who travel along the Lungarni to the Ponte di Mezzo. Troups of the Tramontana and Mezzogiorno factions also parade as do some 80 Judges.

The theme of the Pisa June Festival this year is "Pisa, the magical city, celebrates June with history, art, science and traditions."

There is a varied calendar of events that are sure to be engaging: guided tours, exhibitions and presentations of books and more.

Special itineraries have been organized just for the Pisa in June Festival to discover "hidden" corners in the city: among them are "The Night of Miracles", "In search of lost churches of Pisa", "Let us rediscover our river Arno in the history, nature and tradition".

There are also interesting exhibitions that have opened for the occasion: at the Palazzo Lanfranchi is "The absorbing eye" which presents the best photographs of Darius Zucchi, while the exhibit, "Federigo Severini. The architectural work", pays homage to this great architect from Pisa.

Along the Pisan coast, the sea provides the backdrop to lots of culture: they are 17 book presentations in the beach establishments, that will be accompanied by music, food and wine tastings and exhibitions. These are unique events dedicated to legendary famous people and places.

Galileo Galilei,
one of the most important historical figures of the city, was given a treasure hunt in the library rooms of the Domus Galileana. Another event is a tribute to pianist Gemma Luziani from Pisa, who will give her name to the square in viale delle Piagge.
