"Veglie Francigene" to relive history

Art, history and events along the Via Francigena

A summer to relive moments of the past and the centuries-old history of the Via Francigena. From June 19 to September 11, the "Veglie Francigene" return to enliven the age-old pilgrim's route through summer. A rich calendar of cultural events, historical re-enactments and commemorations, exhibitions and conferences are sure to bring visitors and participants back centuries into Tuscany's fascinating medieval past. All in celebration of the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrim's route that led the faithful from northern Europe to Rome and that crosses through Tuscany. 


The calendar of events:

On June 19, the "Veglie" begin in Pontremoli with a conference on the Via Francigena, which is followed by an itinerant parade in Balconevisi on June 24 with the 'night of the witches'. On July 1, Fillattiera readies for a day of sports and culture along the Via Francigena. The event moves to Monteriggioni on July 3 and 10 with a medieval festival and two "veglie" dedicated to the arrival of the sacred artifact of San Cirino. A parade along the ancient path, in the Valle Benedetta (municipality Collesalvetti) comes to Fucecchio and Castelfranco on July 9. On July 18, there will be a theatre show staged in the Teatro Agricolo.   
 
The festival continues in Aulla on July 14 with a reading of the Divine Comedy coupled with a tasting of traditional pilgrim meals. In Gambassi Terme and Montaione, a medieval dinner will be held on July 21, and in Lucca there will be a guided tour of the pilgrim's route in the city centre. In Altopascio, three squares will come alive on July 24 will pilgrims and medieval characters. On July 25, you can walk among chestnut and oak forests along the Via Francigena in Castiglion D’Orcia until the end of the trajectory where there will be a feast. On August 4, Castelfiorentino will stage a theatre performance of excerpts from Dante Alighieri and other classics from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. From August 6 to 8, Abbadia San Salvatore  will host the “Journey of the spirit 2010," a journey of memory to rediscover the food, words and music of the past. From August 13 to 18, Camaiore comes alive with food tastings and medieval dinners with live music and recitals of Boccaccio.

The "veglie" in San Miniato takes place in Palio di San Rocco, from August 15 to 16.   On August 20, take a talk along the Via Francigena in Radicofani with a guide that will give historical and cultural information to participants; the event ends with dinner in the square of the Jewish ghetto. From August 21 to 14, Acquapendente goes back to its rural and artisanal past, while a special night is organized in Siena on September 7 during which participants get an insider's look of Siena's most important places. Finally, in conference dedicated to the Via Francigena in Volterra on September 7; the night ends with games of fire and medieval music.
