The library was founded in the 1473 as a donation by the Cardinal Niccolo’ Forteguerri. In 1696, it was opened to the public for the first time. The library was enlarged in 1533-34 by the architect Giovanni Unghero. Both the school and library were called the Collegio Fonteguerri. The library was largely abandoned in the early-1900s. The institute was then renewed and re-launched in the 1950s. Today, the library holds some 300,000 books, over 250 journals, 1000 manuscripts, 126 incunabulum, 3000 cinquecentine, 2000 prints and 2790 brochures. The oldest part of the collection consists of antiques codes from the 1300s. The items in the collection have largely been donated or purchased by museum staff. Today, library users can consult a bibliographic and documentary database in the library or online.
