24 free concerts in 21 different Tuscan locations, drum and jazz guitar lessons taught by talented musicians at this summer’s festival, video labs and photography workshops… all this and more make up the ninth edition of the photographic contest “Fotografando la musica” and are all part of the MusicastradaFestival 2012. The audience is becoming evermore heterogeneous, involved and enthusiastic about the performances and initiatives organized. People, tourists or locals who happen to be passing by the piazzas where the events take place remain bewitched by the suggestive scenery and in awe of the performances that unfurl before them.
Start your journey in France with The Dynamics, admire a charming Pieve a San Casciano (Florence? no! Cascina, in the province of Pisa), make a pit stop in the United States, relax in the piazza/terrace (Montopoli), and admire the scenery which encompasses Monte Serra and the sea (passing through the turbine blades of Pontedera) and listen to John Helliwell from Supertramp on the sax, or perhaps spend the afternoon with the drummer Paul Wertico from the Pat Metheny Group.
Several piazzas are a must see if you are interested in experiencing the sounds of the extreme Italian North and the deep Italian South (Paola Donzella e Mascarimirì). What, you are not tired yet? Then you must absolutely head out to discover another location from which you can admire the greater part of the Valdera (Santo Pietro Belvedere) to the sounds of the Irish band, theWhisky Trail, which has recently received wide acclaim and its violin player, Giulia Lorimer who this year turns 80, she surely has stories to tell! Have you ever heard of Sweden? And how about the Piazza of the town of Montacalvoli? Certainly you have heard of the former… but the latter might be a bit of a mystery to you.
In any case, in this town awaits a delightful surprise: a female trio of phenomenally talented musicians all the way from Scandinavia. They are the Loulou Sisters. Have you ever experienced an entirely frescoed piazza and an extraordinary staircase that transforms into a makeshift natural amphitheater? Do you know of a musician that wanders about on his own calling himself a dog? We know of both these curiosities. Piazza del Seminario in San Miniato and Isonouncane (or better Iamadog).
And if you have never been to Cuba but you are curious to know how the islanders play their jazz, all you need to do is pay a visit to Piazza San Matteo a Montopoli (jot down this date and name) – August 4th Afro-Cuba Rumba ’n Jazz).
Maybe you are the type to boast about having traveled the entire world but perhaps you didn’t know that everyone comes to visit the Val di Cecina. Where is this place, you ask? Follow the trails of the Musicastrada and you will find out. But let the musicians and the sounds of Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, Burkina Faso, Cuba be your guide. This is a festival to follow and to cherish, like the flavors and smells that are typical of Tuscany and that mingle with the delectable spice that is music… in fact, thanks to the international batch of musicians, the MusicastradaFestival is a chance for musicians to meet, confront each other and join in debate. Every year these talented musicians give us a rich and tasty menu sure to satisfy even the most sophisticated palates.
In addition, there will be a series of events happening alongside the Festival, which will culturally enrich and complete the musical program by combining music, photography, video, landscape and fine arts. The lab headed by Giacomo Verde called VideoCreativo will take place in Calcinaia, while the Music and Scene Photography workshop will see Elia Falaschi and Alice Durigatto and be held in Castellina Marittima. The jazz guitar and drumming lessons taught by masters of the trade Paul Wertico and Jonathan Kreisberg will take place in Montopoli.
To conclude, last but not least, the ninth edition of the photographic contest “Photographing Music” is an unique event not to be missed. Any one can participate and at no cost to the participant. The theme is “music” in the sense of more than just the traditional representation of the musician or shot of the musician on stage, but taking into consideration the audience, listener, dance, a detail of an instrument, a particular musical stage or showcase of design for performance… In other words, an image that has its own sound and expresses a rhythm.
