Palazzo Pitti will soon return to fulfilling its function as famed concert hall as it was centuries ago with the Medici family (for the wedding of Maria and Enrico IV of France accompanied by the harmonies of Peri’s Euridice), for the Lorena family and finally with the Savoia. It now rests upon the students of the Scuola di Musica of Fiesole who are involved in the project ‘Museo in Musica', to bring back to life the notes, instruments and scores in the once regal abode of Palazzo Pitti.
Every Thursday beginning at 5:00 PM, starting mid July and continuing through October, with two-week hiatus in mid August, a showcase of the school’s students, young pianists, chamber quartets and a soprano and piano duo will take the stage.
The entry to the concerts is free of charge for visitors to the Galleria Palatina (visitors must be in possession of a regular museum ticket) and seats are available on a first come first serve basis (the hall can hold up to an 80 people max capacity).
The program- organized by maestro Andrea Lucchesini, on request of the Board of the Galleria Palatina, sees musical interventions ranging from the 18th century to contemporary times, from Scarlatti to Scelsi, and including Mozart, Chopin, Brahms, Verdi, and with a particular focus on Debussy, who this year celebrates the 150th anniversary of his birth.
We can thus listen to compositions from the piano repertoires of the Preludes, the Studies, le Deux Arabesques, Estampes, Images, as well as the liederistic cycle and de Les Ftes Galantes. As the supervisor for the Florence Museums circuit Cristina Acidini recounts, the series of concerts "represent a unique cultural opportunity to relive the musical past of the Medici palace, a chance to travel back in time but also to come into contact with talented and young classical musicians”.
