'Japan: An Enchanting Land' comes to Palazzo Pitti

From April 3 to July 1 in Florence

In Spring 2012, Palazzo Pitti will be celebrating the art, culture and traditions of Japan. The museum's most important rooms will be given over to three exhibitions which together are entitled 'Giaponne. Terra di incanti' ('Japan: An Enchanting Land').

This event is the result of a cultural exchange between the Florentine Museum Circuit  and a series of Japanese museums and galleries. The three exhibitions are quite distinct and are to be held in different sections of Palazzo Pitti.

The Museo degli Argenti will be home to 'Di linea e di colore'. This exhibition traces the history of Japanese art over three hundred years from the mid-sixteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. It features stunning works of art including paintings, calligraphy, sculpture, Japanese lacquer, ceramics, metalwork and fabrics, all of which make up a fascinating kaleidoscope of lines and colours from which the exhibition takes its name. Visitors will be wowed by the perfect simplicity of the samples of calligraphy or of a ceremonial tea cup, and will enjoy the rich colours and fine details on a screen by the Rinpa school. Japanese artists have shown themselves to be masters of line and colour, in such a way that they truly capture a sense of space and rhythm in their art.

The works of art on display are on loan from several prestigious European, Italian and Japanese museums. The most exciting works borrowed from Japan are the wonderful screens and scrolls by Sakai Hitsu, Ike no Taiga and It Jakuch, which come from the Hosomi Museum in Kyoto. There is also a vase by Nonoura Ninsei; a selection of theatre costumes which belong to the Tokyo Agency for Cultural Affairs; the famous 'Murakamo' tea cup by Hon'ami Ketsu from the Raku Museum in Kyoto and a series of 12 plates by Ogata Kenzan from MOA in Shizuoka.

The Sala Bianca in the Galleria Palatina will host a display of more modern Japanese art with 'L'eleganza della memoria'. Some of Japan's most prominent artists working in the field of decorative art will be represented in this exhibition, which includes pieces from the nineteenth century to the present day. All works of art on display are on loan from three Japanese museums: the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto. This exhibition bears witness to the evolution of modern Japanese art and how ancient traditions have been transformed into contemporary masterpieces.

The Sala del Fiorino in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna will be home to the section of the exhibition entitled 'Giapponismo. Suggestioni d'Oriente tra Macchiaioli e anni Trenta del Novecento'. The works of art on display span the period from 1870 to 1940 and are all by Italian artists whose work was clearly influenced by Japanese art, such as Giovanni Fattori, Telemaco Signorini, Giuseppe De Nittis and Mariano Fortuny. At this time, Japanese culture, art and traditions were very popular, not only in Italy but across Europe and the US. Japanese art was much admired, the culture was studied and many Italians moved to Japan to make their fortune.

Many European and Italian artists, fell in love with Japanese art, which had been previously completely unknown to them. They much admired the use of line, the combinations of bright colours, the dynamic look of scenes and the innovative themes, especially those inspired by nature. Thanks to this influence, their own works of art gained a new sense of light and colour and they often depicted genuine Japanese artefacts in their paintings to confer a sense of the exotic.
