Domus Galilaeana—Discovering Pisa's famous scientists

Fun and learning labs for kids

The Domus Galilaeana is launching a new program complete with learning labs for elementary and middle school children. The institute offers a series of itineraries dedicated to the principle historical scientific figures from Pisa, including Galileo Galilei, Leonardo Fibonacci, Antonio Pacinotti and Enrico Fermi. Workshops use parts of the rich patrimony of the Domus that houses wonderful documents including Galileo’s writings, Pacinotti’s “Notebook of Dreams” and Fermi’s archives. It also boasts a large library specialized in the history of science. The workshops begin in the rooms of the library, where precious archival documents from various scientists will be exhibited and will culminate with a learning lab dedicated specifically to them. The labs will allow students to find the practical application to go along with the theoretical concepts. Armed with glue, markers, scissors and other everyday objects, supervised kids will build a working model of Galileo’s telescope or a scale model of the solar system.

Kids can also become mini-engineers while analyzing the ancient water and fountain systems in the city through by studying a huge map of Pisa from the early 1600s. Or they can become medieval architects by constructing a realistic model of Piazza del Duomo, paying particular attention to details and proportions by examining studies by Fibonacci and the calculation of the Golden ratio.  The program also includes historic and artistic aspects of the city’s past with other itineraries dedicated to the monuments and illustrious characters that have lived in Pisa. The program’s goal is to educate kids—through play—on the basic concepts of the work by the most important scientists of the past, while giving them a way to concretely use their knowledge in practical applications.
