2012 "Terre di Siena” Festival

A summer of music, dance, theater and cinema

The third edition of "Festival in Terre di Siena" is now underway. A unique program of events organized by the Province of Siena will take place from June to October and will bring together artistic and cultural initiatives in the city proper and in the outlying provinces. Dozens of shows, great music, theater, dance, folk drama, literature, cinema and art all come together for a summer of fun and relaxation in addition to giving credence to the land that breathes and generates such fine artistic creativity.

It begins in June
, with literary and lyrical events, and closes in September with a rock music festival and performance arts. The festival is funded and promoted by the Region of Tuscany, Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena and the Province of Siena. 
Picturesque piazzas, evocative sites and charming hamlets will transform into stages in order to host concerts, performances, exhibitions, theatre and more for a summer in the lands of Siena: from Chianti to the Amiata, from Val di Merse to the Crests, crossing the Valdelsa, the city of Siena, the Valdichiana and the splendid Val d’Orcia.

There is a long line-up of scheduled events, including three nights dedicated to the art of popular theater - the Bruscello of Castelnuovo Berardenga and Montepulciano and the Poor Theater of Monticchiello - and twenty five other events, including ones of relevant traditional importance like the 81st edition of the Estate Musicale Chigiana, the 37th edition of the Cantiere internazionale d’arte di Montepulciano, the Festival of the Val d’Orcia, the San Galgano Opera Festival and the Sarteano Jazz & Blues Fest. There are also newer types of events, such as the Festival Misticanza of San Casciano Bagni, the Live Rock Festival of Acquaviva of Montepulciano and the first Marching Band along the Via Francigena, which invites young musicians from the world over to partake in a walk along this ancient way in Siena.

JUNE
Diverse languages and artistic forms of expression are the key ingredients for the upcoming 7th edition of the Festival Narra-zioni Libera Tutti, which will take place on June 7 & 8 in Poggibonsi. Among noted guests are the Spanish group Action Men in the satirical guise of James Bond, a first for Italy, the writers Gianpaolo Simi and Massimo Parlotto, and will conclude with a concert by Paoplo Nori and Carlo Boccadoro.

June 8 will also be the inauguration of the 16th edition of the International Festival of the Shades, scheduled to last until June 16 in the Rocca di Staggia Senese. This year’s theme is “Populations in the shadows. An epic of forgotten peoples.” With the contribution of philosophers, artists and personal stories, the festival’s aim is to involve visitors in a dialogue about people who are forgotten, oppressed, marginalized from society, as well as victims of genocide.

June will also see the opening of the much awaited San Gimignano Summer: three months of music and art lasting from June 15-September 15 and including the 78th season of this city’s opera.

On June 30, beginning at 6:00PM, and continuing throughout the night until 5:00AM the following morning, an event known as Nottilucente, an extraordinary journey alongside internationally acclaimed artists, actors, poets and writers.

From June 21-23, the third edition of Torrita Blues: a much-anticipated display of music, photography and video installations dedicated to blues culture.

Lastly, the curtains rise on the San Galgano Opera Festival (June 30-August 5). The event will take place in the abbey of San Galgano, in Chiusdino and will feature operatic works as Verdi’s Aida, the Carmina Burana by Orff and several concerts by Ludovico Einaudi and Arisa.



JULY
The 14th edition of the Chianti Festival (July 5-6) will take place in some of the most enchanting piazzas of the Chianti region while Siena will host the 69th edition of the Settimana Musicale Senese (July 10-16 and August 5 & 7). Line up includes performances by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Saint Petersburg (July 10), a debut performance by Isidora Zebeljan in the comedic fable-opera “Two Heads and A Girl” (July 12), Jurij Bashmet (July 13) and Maurizio Pollini (August 3 & 7).

From July 12-18 in Montalcino, “Musica Reale”, the 6th International Festival of Chamber Music, featuring several musicians from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam.

From July 20-29, fire will be the central focus of the 37th annual Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte in Montepulciano: an exhibition by the Orchestra of the Royal Northern College of music in Manchester, conducted by Roland Böer.

On a curious note, July will host the first ever Marchin’ Band in Francigena – Music whilst walking (July 21 - 24) thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Provence of Siena and the Foundation for Siena Jazz. Young musicians from all over the world reunite in a Marchin’ band, and walk along the ancient Via Francigena in three routes across enchanting sites. 

From the 25-29 of July, Chianciano Terme will host the 13th edition of the Festa della Musica, curated by the cultural association Collettivo Fabrica, while the 81st edition of the Estate Musicale Chigiana (July 24 – August 28) and the Chigiani Masters in the Lands of Siena (July 26 – August 24) will take place in various picturesque and scenic locations scattered throughout Siena territory.

Welcoming back the return of the Opera Festival of Monteriggioni, (July 27 & 28 and August 5 & 8) is a celebration dedicated to classical music aficionados.

July 27 also marks the beginning of the Amiata Festival (July 27 – August 19) of the Abbey of San Salvatore with multimedia performances and video installations treating subjects of theater and music.

From July 24 until August 7, the city of Siena will be host several jazz concerts, part of the Siena Jazz. In addition to music there will be lectures and seminars held by internationally acclaimed jazz musicians and instructors, concerts at the Enoteca Italiana and a jam session. On July 28, the curtain will rise for the Summer Festival of Radicondoli, which has been ongoing for 26 years and combines music, prose, tradition and innovation with talented and emerging artists.

In July and extending through to September, the much anticipated Cetona Estate 2012 will take place in Cetona’s historic center, its small hamlet and within the piazzas. Cetona is a well-known destination for visitors interested in experiencing “slow tourism”. Come and participate in this city’s live musical and theater performances, cinema and a curious historic re-enactment.

AUGUST
The 17th Festival of the Val d’Orcia (August 1-15) boasts an international lineup of theater, music and dance in the province towns of Castiglione d’Orcia, Montalcino, Pienza, Radicofani, San Quirico D’Orcia and among the castles and the hamlets that adorn the Artistic, Cultural and Natural Park of Val d’Orcia. August 3 – 12, the LARSFESTIVAL Horizons of the city of Chiusi, theater, storytelling for children, historical reenactments and food sampling. From August 24-26, taking place in the historic center of Sarteano and in Castiglioncello of Trinoro, a most unforgettable concert for those who love jazz and blues music: the 22nd Sarteano Jazz & Blues, curated by the Nuova Accademia of the Arrischianti di Sarteano. From August 31 – September 2, San Casciano dei Bagni will host Misticanza012, Art Festival, in order to celebrate a unique and dynamic encounter between all forms of art, concerts and performances by internationally known artists.

SEPTEMBER

Live Rock Festival, A festival for the younger crowd. It will be held in Acquaviva of Montepulciano and will take place from the 5-9 of September: 15 concerts in just 5 nights with hundreds of select musicians of rock, electronic music, world fusion, jazz, pop and singer songwriters.

September is also the return of the fourth edition of Arte, mistica e paesaggi (September 6- October 7) in Sovicille: cabaret performances, classical music concerts and the exhibition of Mario Picchi’s “A Sienese in Rome”, which received the “Plinio Tammaro” prize.

To close the festival in the Lands of Siena will be the Festival of the Performing Arts of Siena, which conjoins the Festival Contemporaneamente Barocco and the Festival Voci di Fonte e TeatrInScatola (September 21-October 14).

Three internationally important projects underway for the multidisciplinary festival on the performing arts. The city of Siena will host a variety of Baroque music concerts, spoken word performances, dance and theater workshops for kids, workshops dedicated to photography installations, encounters and didactic seminars. July will also see the performance of the International Summer School known as “Playing identities: acting, the self and society”, of the secondary school of Santa Chiara of the University of Siena. 



POPULAR THEATER IN THE LANDS OF SIENA
Among the various theatrical and performance events programmed for this year’s festival, the most important are: the “Bruscello”, performed in Castelnuovo Berardenga and Montepulciano and the “Poor Theater of Montichiello”.

The 16th edition of Bruscello of Castelnuovo Berardenga (June 21-24) will be performed in the park of Villa Chifi and this year will be dedicated to Pia de’ Tolomei, a legendary female figure in Sienese medieval history. The “Bruscello” is an expressive form of song and theater belonging to the realm of the farmer and recounts the stories of epic characters using the poetic meter of ottava rima.

The first drama is self written and produced by the townspeople of Montichiello, and will be held on July 21st with replicas every night until August 14th.

The troupe of the Poor theater of Monticchiello, who live closely with the local community is currently working on their upcoming theatrical rendition, and as a result it is a continuous work in progress.

This year, The Popular Troupe of the Bruscello of Montepulciano will bring to the stage of the sacresty of the cathedral, in Piazza Grande, their own rendition of “Orpheus and Euridice” Transferred in 1939 from the Valdichiana countryside to one of the most important civic and religious centers of the city, the Bruscello will animate Montepulciano and the surrounding areas, attracting the local inhabitants and tourists alike. From August 12-15.
