Villa Crastan

Built in the second half of nineteenth century, this villa experienced a period of renewed grandeur in the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1920, it underwent profound restyling, being updated to suit the Liberty tastes of the time. Galileo Chini gives the villa other noteworthy features transforming its structure thanks to famous ceramic decorations. Cherub and floral motifs embellish its otherwise linear character. In practice, the house underwent a profound change in appearance, similar to those which characterized other buildings, such as Villa Sofia.
The villa was the summer residence of the Crastan family of Lucca, and even today, it remains one of the best examples of Art Nouveau in Versilia. It recalls the style typical of modern buildings such as the ‘Supercinema Savoia’, ‘Gran Caffè Margherita’ and ‘Duilio 48’. Villa Crastan embodies perhaps the best example of early twentieth century adapted architecture. Though a product of the previous century, the villa was able to be transformed thanks to Chini’s new aesthetic taste. This trend was common, however; most of the villas and palaces located along the seaside in Versilia, experienced new splendour thanks to the most famous ceramic master of the period.
