The Camposanto Monumentale in Pisa

The Camposanto Monumentale in Pisa is home to a fascinating collection of ancient Roman sarcophaguses and fourteenth century frescoes

Work was begun on the Camposanto Monumentale in the year 1278 by Giovanni di Simone. Today, it is home to an extraordinary cycle of fourteenth and fifteenth century frescoes by Taddeo Gaddi, Andrea Bonaiuti, the Maestro del Trionfo della Morte and Benozzo Gozzoli. Sadly, these frescoes were seriously damaged during the Second World War. After careful restoration work, visitors can now enjoy these precious examples of Medieval and Early Renaissance art and the frescoes have now been returned to their original home, adorning the walls of the monumental buildings in the Camposanto. This original setting is the perfect place to set off the full splendour of this beautiful cycle of frescoes.
