War Memorial of Viareggio

Viareggio’s War Memorial is in Piazza Garibaldi. The work carried out by Lorenzo Viani with the technical collaboration of the sculptor Rambelli, was inaugurated in 1927 causing disputes and controversy. Man is always at the centre of this artist’s work, more painter than sculptor, who was born to a poor family in Viareggio near to the old dock. Through the War Memorial he offers a sample of Expressionist sculpture, investigating human suffering.
