Bacchino Fountain

Symbol of city and change in Prato

The Fontana di Bacchino, Prato’s symbol, can be found in the city’s main piazza. The statue was made by Ferdinando Tacca from 1659 to 1665 after the proclamation of the city and diocese of Prato. The artist depicted a young Bacchus in bronze sitting around bunches of grapes. Various spouts placed in the shell shaped valley in the center and the large octagonal tub, shoot water into other circular tubs. The choice of Bacchus comes from his young and euphoric characteristics that tie him directly to the city’s renewal. The bath and the original sculptures are found inside Palazzo Comunale; a 20th century copy is found in the piazza.
