In Viareggio, near Piazza D’Azeglio, you can find Piazza Shelley, which is dedicated to the famous English poet that moved there in the early 1800s. The bust of Percy B. Shelley was made by Urbano Lucchesi. A pupil of Dupre’, the young Lucchesi was artistic director of the famed Ginori porcelain. Near the end of the 1800s, he began specializing in monumental and commemorative sculptures that were typical of the Italian Risorgimento, like the many statues of Garibaldi or Mazzini. This stylistic element is also found in the monument to Shelley.
