The Visitors’ Centre housed in Palazzo Pretorio, a twelfth/thirteenth century building which was renovated in the fifteenth century. The façade of the palazzo is decorated with the coats of arms of the town’s various captains of justice and Sienese commissioners. The Centre provides visitors with information about the necropolis outside the small town of Sovana. This necropolis is home to many different types of tombs, such as the famous late third/early fourth century BC Ildebranda Tomb, which is shaped like a temple carved from the rock. The Centre is also home to a permanent exhibition about the areas of archaeological interest around the town and includes some original fragments from the façade of the Ildebranda Tomb. Sovana necropolis is part of the Tufo Archaeological Park, a kind of open-air museum which stretches over 70 hectares. The Park is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty and has many sites of archaeological interest. It includes not only the Sovana necropolis, but also the San Rocco necropolis and the rocky settlement in Vitozza.
