During the celebrations dedicated to Galileo, Palazzo Strozzi is hosting a major exhibition spotlighting his extraordinary human and intellectual adventure that led to the way we currently perceive the universe. This exhibition, on show from March 13 to August 30, is being curated by Paolo Galluzzi, Director of the Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence. The exhibition is sponsored by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage, the Region of Tuscany, the Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze and the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi.
The exhibition reconstructs the history of the Cosmos, as it was designed and illustrated from ancient times until the Scientific Revolution. The context of the exhibition spotlights social and cultural events that characterized the Mediterranean and European civilization. This exciting journey starts with the visions and mystical poetic background of the Greeks. It showcases the complex architecture of Ptolemy, spotlighting Arab contributions to astronomy and discussing the revolutionary theory of Copernicus. The exhibit also represents the theories of Galileo and Kepler, who contributed significantly to a new view of the universe.
This fascinating history is illustrated dramatically, thanks to scientific instruments of exceptional beauty and ingenuity, celestial atlases, drawings, paintings, sculptures, archaeological finds and precious illuminated manuscripts from the most prestigious museums and libraries around the world. All elements are explained and supported by extraordinary operating cosmological models made for the occasion. Multimedia applications and evocative movies explore the key issues.
