Safeguarding the area's religious treasures

The sacred art museum in Incisa Val d’Arno is in the Oratory of the Crucifix, an old place of worship that dates back to the 14th century and was reworked in the 17th century. The building has a simple shape: one nave with an altar in pietra serena. It takes its name from the miraculous crucifix that was brought to Incisa in the 14th century by a procession of white penitents, called as such for the colour of their clothing; they invoked a sense of brotherhood and forgiveness in times of adversity, and it’s why today in Incisa the feast of Forgiveness is celebrated.

The museum collects and showcases works coming from the surrounding churches, San Lorenzo in Cappiano, San Quirico in Montelfi, San Michele in Morniano, San Vito in Loppiano, San Niccolò in Olmeto and Cetina.

Here, you can admire the 14th century Madonna with child, by Maestro di Barberino, as well as two important 16th century works, the Madonnas with child by Sebastiano Mainardi and Giuliano Bugiardini, both students of Ghirlandaio. Equally remarkable is the 17th century painting of St. Michael weighing souls, attributed to Orazio Fidani. In the sacristy you’ll find Holy regalia, furnishings, relics and ex-votos.
