The Archaeological Museum in Orentano

The museum is home to a series of ceramic archaeological finds, funerary items, weapons and utensils that date from the fifth century BC to the fourteenth century AD

The Archaeological Museum in Orientano is housed in the building which used to be the town’s small theatre. The building was constructed in the mid-twentieth century. It is privately owned and was abandoned for a long period before being renovated. During renovation work, the building was divided into two floors; the top floor became a private residence and the ground floor was made into the museum. The museum’s exhibits are the result of regular research and study which have uncovered many artefacts and materials illustrating the history of the territory. Items on display include graphic reconstructions and models which show the history of human settlement in the area of Bientina Lake from the Palaeolithic Era to the Medieval period.

School groups are encouraged to take part in educational activities organised by the museum. The museum aims to increase awareness of the long and rich history of this region and the many themes connected to it. Most of the items on display come either from systematic archaeological digs carried out by the Soprintendenza ai Beni Archeologici della Toscana in the Bientina marshland (near Castelfranco di Sotto), or by independent digs by individual enthusiasts.
