A ‘virtual’ park to explore the many mysteries of the Etruscans in Maremma

This project involves all the municipalities of Grosseto which have archaeological sites and museums

Get to know the world of Etruscan civilisation in Maremma through a ‘virtual’ park with detailed and original content. The Parco Tematico degli Etruschi (the Thematic Etruscan Park), or PTE, involves all the municipalities of the Grosseto area which have archaeological museums and sites. The park doesn’t cover a precise and limited area of land but rather the whole of the Maremma region and its many archaeological sites and museums. It is a real ‘virtual’ park and uses the latest technology on its web portal as well as at its two Visitors’ Centres which act as ‘entrances’ to the park.

These two Visitors’ Centres are in Massa Marittima (at the Clarisse Monastery) and at Sorano (at Orsini Fort). The PTE’s website (www.parcodeglietruschi) plays a fundamental role in providing cultural and tourist information. It is organised in sections and has hundreds of informative pages, over 200 images and 170 multimedia files. There are interactive games and services for visitors such as the Infopoint. The ‘E-trù’ section of the website was created in collaboration with Scuola Normale university in Pisa.

There are 17 ‘legs’ of the museum in total including museums, libraries and offices in 11 different municipalities: Scarlino, Castiglione della Pescaia, Grosseto, Orbetello, Follonica, Scansano, Magliano, Manciano, Pitigliano, Sorano and Massa Marittima. Each of these has an interactive totem which allows visitors to consult texts, high resolution videos and games, as well as connect to the parks web portal. As well as these totems, the Visitors’ centres also have multimedia information panels which are projected onto plexiglass and which allow visitors to surf through various information using simple hand movements. Another popular addition is the Magic Carpet which allows visitors to walk on top of a computer generated image which reacts to movements.
