Andrea della Robbia, Pietà of Christ

Andrea della Robbia  (Firenze 1435-1528) was an important Italian ceramic artist. He was an expert in polychromatic and glass ceramics, a technique invented by his uncle, Luca della Robbia.

In this artwork, Christ is depicted as he lies in his tomb. His loincloth has been partly removed, perhaps indicating that he is about to stand up onto his feet. His palms are open and show the holes suffered from being nailed onto the cross. His head is bent to the right, and his face is directed to the floor. His long hair rests on his shoulders. It is curly, just like the hair of his beard.
