Medusa by Caravaggio

The Medusa is a tondo or circular painting by Caravaggio is at the Uffizi Gallery. The last time it was showcased in Milan was in 1951 at the exhibit, called ‘Caravaggio e dei Caravaggeschi’, curated by Roberto Longhi. In 1993, the mafia bombing on via Gerorgofili in Florence significantly damaged the work.

Thanks to restoration completed in 2002, the artwork has returned to its original splendor. The famous 15th-century shield, on which Caravaggio painted the terrifying face of Gorgon, was given to Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici in the 16th century by Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte. The last restoration effort revealed that Caravaggio used a wheel that was older than what critics thought.
