Discover a rocky slice of paradise

di Jennifer Mallegni

If you love outdoor leisure, don’t miss experiencing Tuscany’s famed Hiking circuits, where you’ll find breath-taking sights to discover either by bike or on horseback. Visitors to the Apennines won’t want to miss the 400+ kilometer itinerary known as the ‘Great Apennine Crossing’. This 6-day trail, created by CAI, allows for long walks featuring lakes, mountain lodges, green fields, medieval hamlets and ancient forests. Horseback riders are sure to want to take a gallop in and around the Monte Amiata area; The Monte Penna Nature Reserve and the Pigelleto Nature Park are must-see stops for nature lovers who want to know more about the territory’s unique geological characteristics

In Siele, the mining village located in the  National Mining Park of the Amiata, you can learn all about the area’s old-time industries. Travelling by bike along the trails of Lunigiana, make your way amidst castles and Romanic churches, located on the Via Francigena or cycle along the Via del Volto Santo link, where you can follow the footsteps of ancient pilgrims during their spiritual journeys throughout the area. Those who want their share of sea and sand should spend their holidays relaxing along Massa Marittima’s ‘Apuane Riviera’ and take the day to visit some of the incredible marble quarries in the Cararra area.

While hiking through the Apuane Alps, visitors with a weak spot for exploration should go to the Grotta del Vento or take a peek at Antrio del Corchia. A visit to Monte Forato’s Nature Park offers spectacular views of the territory’s geological landscape. The Casentinesi Forests are one of the largest woodsy regions in Europe; modern day pilgrims will want to take a trip to the area’s many hermitages like the famed La Verna Sanctuary and the Monastery of Camaldoli; on the way, nature lovers will be caught off guard by the beauty of the Acquacheta waterfalls and Lake Degli Idoli.
