Point of departure/arrival: Bibbona
Distance: 19km
Elevation gain: 340m
Road surface: Dirt
Activity level: Moderately challenging
Note: the entire route is on dirt roads through the heart of the Macchia della Magona (Magona Scrub), a protected area closed to vehicle traffic and a real paradise for walking, cycling and horse riding. For the more athletic, we recommend the high detour, slightly more challenging for the elevation and a section of rough trail. In this case, the distance is 26km with a total elevation gain of 490 metres
Departure is from the centre of Bibbona towards the cemetery where the dirt road begins immediately. After about 1km you come to a fork; go left and begin to climb through the scrub as far as the crossroads. Trail No. 5 begins on the left near a barrier. The dirt road climbs gently, first through cypress trees and then among holm and Turkey oaks, rising steeply on the last stretch before reaching the Terminino Pass (281 above sea level). Here you turn right onto Trail No. 10, which continues to climb gradually for 1.7km to Poggio al Fango (340m above sea level) before descending to Botro Campo di Sasso (Stone Field Gully) valley on one of the two alternative routes.
1) The normal route (Trail No. 2) via the scenic road, which remains elevated for 3km as far as the turn off on the right where Trail No. 13 begins.
2) The high route, which continues on Trail 10 (at the turn off on the left), climbing through a variety of scenic points to Campo di Bibbona, where there is a spring called Fonte del Ciliegio.
Going past Poggio Il Morticino (visible on the right), you reach the Golazze Aperte Pass (475m above sea level) where you leave the road and continue, preferably on foot, on Trail No. 16 which starts on your right and after 200m comes out at the most scenic point of the route – the view ranges over the entire Macchia della Magona (Magona Scrub) as far as the coast. At Tre Confini (Three Borders), turn right. For about 1km the trail cannot be cycled because of large rocks and erosion caused by rain. Once past this rough stretch, remount and proceed as far as the Immaginetta fork where you take Trail No. 12, a dirt road on the right. Continue at altitude for 800m to an easy ford and after 200m, turn left onto Trail No. 13. The first short stretch (400m) is too rough to pedal but soon becomes a comfortable, lovely gravel road lined by a double row of cypress trees that descends along the Botro Campo di Sasso. The road continues downhill past Poggio Cornetto to the bridge over Botro degli Strinati (Gully of the Singed) before rising again to the intersection where you go left to Bibbona.
Short alternative route (9km, 120m elevation gain). Follow the same itinerary as far as the Trail No. 5 barrier (2.6km); here turn right onto the No. 6 and after 300m continue for 2.3km on Trail No. 9 as far as Casetta at Campo di Sasso. The road continues downhill past Poggio Cornetto to the bridge over Botro degli Strinati and then rises again to the intersection where you go left to Bibbona.
