PIAZZA DEL CAMPO

Undoubtedly the heart of Siena, the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo is the breathtaking setting of the city’s exciting Palio. Declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, it hosts incredible medieval symbols of the city’s glorious past. The imposing Torre del Mangia, for example, rises from the city’s most important palace—the Palazzo Pubblico, which was once the seat of its noble Signoria and the town’s governor. This historic building currently hosts both the City Hall and the Civic Museum.

DUOMO

Among various treasures that can be found there, visitors will truly appreciate the remarkable fresco ‘della Maestà’ by Simone Martine, a noteworthy Sienese artist whose evocative works are highly valued. Those who love panoramas should not miss going to the top of the tower where you can see a unique view of the entire historical center. The city’s Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is one of Italy’s most significant architectural examples of the Romanic-Gothic style. It is well-known for its recognizable black and white striped marble façade; inside, you’ll find the Libreria Piccolomini, which hosts a splendid fresco cycle by Pinturicchio. Behind the Duomo, you’ll see the Baptistery of San Giovanni, which hosts a precious baptismal font by Jacopo della Quercia. Visitors are sure to appreciate the city’s many marvellous buildings which represent Siena’s elegance. Palazzo Tolomei, for example, is the city’s most ancient palace; the fourteenth century Palazzo Salimbeni is also noteworthy.

PALAZZO PICCOLOMINI

The nearby Palazzo Piccolomini, built by the heirs of Pius II, is a pure example of Renaissance architecture. The palace is thought to have been built according to a design by Bernardo Rossellino, the pope’s official architect. Today, the palace plays hosts to Siena’s State Archives offices and the Museo delle Biccherne, where you can view an exceptional collection of small works that once served as covers for the Municipality of Siena’s financial registers.
